Making A Mark
A one-room log cabin in the mountains of southwest Virginia was the birthplace of Napoleon Hill. The year 1883 found another young lad being cast into the midst of poverty. To alleviate this problem, his father came upon a "sure-fire" answer to the lad's plight and accordingly named his son Napoleon. The reason for this was to enhance the possibility that a rich uncle, also named Napoleon, would look upon the lad with favour and leave him a substantial sum of money. This was to be Napoleon Hill's ticket to success. However, this was never realized, for when the gentleman died, the lad in the mountains of Virginia received not a penny! Concerning this event, Dr. Hill often said, "That was one of the most fortunate events in my life, for it literally forced me to make my own mark in life through my own efforts; it kept me from falling prey to the silver spoon." And make his mark he did!

Spurred by his inspirational stepmother, while still a teenager, young Napoleon became a newspaper reporter, supplying local news stories to over a dozen papers throughout the state. His originality and unusual style did not go unnoticed. Robert L. Taylor's, onetime governor of Tennessee and owner of "Bob Taylors' Magazine," employed young Hill to write "success stories" about the lives of famous Americans. It was by this means that he was to send himself through Georgetown University Law School. However, the very first assignment that Bob Taylor gave the aspiring Hill, completely changed his life's direction. As young Hill walked into the plush, swanky office of financial giant Andrew Carnegie, little did he realize what was about to unfold, for here he became associated with the richest man in America at that time.

The previously arranged three-hour interview, which Carnegie has promised Hill, became a three-day interview in which, the grand old man of the steel industry reversed the tables and interviewed the young reporter. It was during these three days that Andrew Carnegie attempted to sell Hill on the idea of devoting 20 years to compiling the world's first success philosophy. Carnegie's only promise was to support the endeavour with letters of introduction and payment of travel expenses. Financially Hill would have to stand alone. Would he accept the challenge?

Silence filled the room. The young reporter did not speak for 29 seconds ... and then he gave the answer Carnegie had hoped he would hear: "Yes," he would accept the challenge! Little did he realize that Carnegie was holding in his hand a stopwatch, and that if he had hesitated for over 60 seconds the chance would no longer have been his. Carnegie believed that men who are slow to decide are also poor risks for reaching long-term goals. Having accepted this most unusual assignment, Hill set out to accomplish what he had promised to do. He would compile a philosophy of success that every individual could study, understand and apply in his life.
